“The Future is Blinking” – Early Studio Photografphy from West and Central Africa
This is the first exhibition to focus on the work of the earliest local photographers working in West and Central Africa. Towards the end of the 19th century, together with their clients, they began to produce captivating images in outdoor studios. With around one hundred original prints, the exhibition considers the key themes in the history of photography in West and Central Africa with a focus on its peculiarities and its connections with other local art forms.

CAP Prize 2020 and 2021 – Outdoor exhibition in the Rieterpark
Contemporary photography and Africa: 9 outstanding photo series awarded with the CAP Prize for contemporary African photography are being presented in an extensive open-air exhibition.
The CAP Prize focuses on photographers whose work was created on the African continent or deals with African diasporas. The award takes on the form of a series of exhibitions in collaboration with leading photography institutions and festivals in Africa and across the globe.

Passions and Prayers – From the Collection of Eva and Konrad Seitz
Strong colours, clear geometrical forms, and patterns ranging from graceful to luxurious are hallmarks of miniature paintings from the Indian region of Bundelkhand. Princely courts produced exceptional masterpieces of Indian art that offer insights into the practices and stylistic development of artists reacting to the region’s cultural and political trends over three hundred years. Eva and Konrad Seitz have now donated their Bundelkhand miniatures to the Rietberg Museum.

zum Halbjahreszyklus «Aspekte – Einblicke in die Welt der Religionen»
Während in westlichen Kulturen von einer klaren Trennung zwischen dem Jenseits und dem Diesseits ausgegangen wird, sind solche Übergänge in afrikanischen Ländern fliessend. Neben dem Thema der Transzendenz zwischen den Welten, werden in dieser Führung auch die Masken-Traditionen der verschiedenen Ethnien näher betrachtet werden, bei denen der Träger zum getanzten Wesen wird.
