Based on the history of the Semper Observatory the exhibition explores the human fascination about the creation of meaning out of patterns like the constellations of stars and planets and, today, on all kinds of extracted data. Diverse methods of artificial intelligence algorithms and applications help us recognize and “see” these patterns, often for predictions and prognostics. In this field, where deep learning artificial neural networks are often referred to as black box, one also talks of “Data Alchemy”.

With the AI+Art Conversations we encourage the dialogue between art and science, by bringing artists and scientists, as well as curators, engineers, critical thinkers and more together to exchange their ideas, practices and works. This might change not only the mindsets of the conversation partners, but also of the audience. Artistic interest and work in the fields of science and technology, has been ongoing for decades. Lately, these attempts have generated a lot of attention and turned art into a topic of high interest in science and technology research, as well as development thanks to AI affecting all of human society.

Shadow Walkers by artist Rohini Devasher is a collective experience of lying down together gazing up at the sky, mimicking the act of amateur astronomers world over, and like them linked by common experience, in this case of the audio files, of the experience of this ‘collective rest or sleep’.
How does one create a sense of engagement with someone else’s experiences? Is it possible to be an active participant once a work is complete? As an amateur astronomer herself, Devasher is keen to explore the dual role of the artist as both ‘participant’ and ‘observer’. Shadow Walkers is one vignette within this project.
The vignette is played on MP3 players arranged in any open space under the sky. Mats provide a surface for people to lie under the sky / stars and listen to the piece. There is an intimacy to the experience.
* bring your own smartphone and headphones, and a mat to lie on.
