Walter de Maria

Permanent Exhibition

Walter de Maria, The 2000 Sculpture, 1992, plaster and Hydrocal, 10 x 50 m
© Bechtler Stiftung, Estate of Walter de Maria, Photo: Flavio Karrer

The 2000 Sculpture is among the largest indoor sculptures consisting of 2,000 plaster rods. Despite their uniform size, the elements vary in shape with five, seven, nine sides, laid out across 500 square metres in 20 rows of 100 elements.
The title references the turn of the Millenium and number of elements contained. Walter de Maria was always interested in turning points in human history and created an artistic interpretation, marking it with a monumental work that befitted the occasion.

I Couldn't Agree With You More, 1999
Pipilotti Rist

Permanent Exhibition

Pipilotti Rist, I Couldn't Agree With You More, 1999, Audio Video Installation, site specific
© Bechtler Stiftung

Pipilotti Rist (*1962) explores conventions and taboos. Color rush lends her videos a painterly quality. In “I Couldn’t Agree With You More”, 1999, she strides through a shopping mall, naked figures in a forest appear on her forehead. Rist opposes consumer expectations and the capitalist world of commodities with people’s unconscious needs and alludes to an ideal world in harmony with nature, free of conventions. A form of “selfie” in which the inner film stands in contrast to reality.

Karla Black

April 20 – October 06, 2024

Karla Black, 2024
© Karla Black

Karla Black (*1972) Glasgow. 2011, she represented Scotland at the 54th Venice Biennale and was nominated for the Turner Prize.
A room-filling sculpture plunges the visitor into a world of pink, peach, yellow. Black’s works are references to minimal and conceptual art of the 1960s/70s and expand the classic concept of sculpture through a process-oriented, performative approach to atypical materials and materials with cultural connotations. She prioritizes material experience over language and representational imagery as means to understanding the world.
