Barbara Seiler Galerie | Performance "To Die" with Shana Lutker
Titled ‘To Die’ this participative performance invites the viewer to enact a score in a predetermined place of the gallery space. ‘To Die’ refers to a dance performance of Valeska Gert, an important representatives of avant-garde dance in the 1920s, who analyzed the limits of societal conventions and expressed the insights with her body. Gert could be by turns grotesque, intense, mocking, pathetic or furious, performing with an anarchic intensity and artistic fearlessness which also recommended her to the Dadaists. For the past years, Shana Lutker has been compiling the history of Dada and the Surrealists, visiting the sites across Europe where their performances and performative actions took place, and delving into archives. These altercations highlight the conviction, absurdity, passion and calculation of this avant-garde group, and raise questions about the way that passion and art combine today.

Barbara Seiler Galerie | Performance "You’ve crossed the line!" with Dina Danish
This participatory performance by Egyptian artist and writer Dina Danish invites, if not forces, the audience to participate in the performance when entering or leaving the gallery space. At the entrance of a room, a white line is seen on the floor as if closing off the room. On the other side of the line (outside of the room) it reads: YOU’VE CROSSED THE LINE! The text is written in such a way that it is readable when leaving the room. In her multi-media work, Danish focuses on language and structure, incorporating humor and misunderstanding.

Galerie Mark Müller | VERNISSAGE OF "GASPING FOR BREATH" BY MARKUS WEGGENMANN
«Gasping for Breath»: that is what we are experiencing every day amongst the flood of current news about wars, catastrophes, the loss of human values. Markus Weggenmann paints against this current mood of narrowing, the constriction of our own experience of being. With his simple, lush paintings, he creates large «color-field-mountain-landscapes» in the hope of providing room to breathe, at least for a moment.

Screening Program | Together? Together!
The screening programme co-presented by Istituto Svizzero and Mousse is nourished by a reflection on the necessity of shared thinking across disciplines, institutions, and cultural practices, as much as by the friendship and consonance that unite the two curators, Barbara Casavecchia (writer, independent curator and educator) and Gioia Dal Molin (Head Curator and Artistic Director at Istituto Svizzero). The question of doing things together - together? Yes, of course, together! - is also the thematic starting point for the video works of the 9 artists, who direct their gaze from the individual to the collective, from the ‘I’ to the ‘we’.

The performance ‘unknowing, unearthing’ is a collaboration between Latefa Wiersch (b. 1983), New Kyd, and Tiran Willemse. Through the use of body, movement, sound, text, costumes, and puppets that intertwine, transform, and exchange roles, the work explores the unfamiliar within the familiar. The process of humanization of ‘objects’ as well as its opposite: dehumanization, becoming object-like addresses xenophobia and racism and attempts to counteract these by creating a space for new ways of thinking and acting, a different vision of the world – ambivalent, nonsensical, and disordered. The performance makes a connection to the Zurich Dadaist, who fled during WWI and imagined a similar world of ‘exotic’ African countries, admiring, imitating and mocking their masks, dances and rhythms. Willemse, New Kyd and Wiersch, drawing inspiration from Adam Pendleton’s Black Dada Manifesto, look back at Dada to be able to look forward: to retell history, to be in the present, to grasp and to let go.

Luma Westbau | VERNISSAGE OF "DISSONANT BELONGING" by Ahlam Shibli
Unfolding personal narratives, Ahlam Shibli’s work explores ways in which history can be reconstructed through the photographic lens. Embedding herself in the life of her subjects, Shibli examines conflicts informing a variety of private, political, and social contexts. Her images register unrecognized perspectives on society by concentrating on particular communities, places and events. Bringing together key series of photographs from her entire career alongside the most recent work, ‘Belonging’ (2022–23), created during her residency at LUMA Arles (France), the exhibition reveals the many layers composing the reality of the places Shibli has investigated.

Luma Westbau | VERNISSAGE OF "HANS ULRICH OBRIST ARCHIVES: AGNÈS VARDA"
At the heart of the third chapter of the Hans-Ulrich Obrist Archive lies his encounter with Agnès Varda (1928-2019), the filmmaker, feminist, and pioneer artist, central to the French New Wave film movement of the 50s and 60s. Varda’s artistic career spans, in her own words, three distinct yet interconnected lives as a photographer, filmmaker, and visual artist. The exhibition highlights Obrist’s crucial role in introducing Varda to the world of art, leading to her first invitation to participate in a contemporary art exhibition. Featuring unique works from Varda’s career and a selection of documents from Obrist’s archive, it reveals the interdisciplinary and curious nature of their shared vision.

Opening of new exhibitions from Ana Jotta and David Armstrong, with an introduction by director Daniel Baumann, artist Wade Guyton and curator Miguel Wandschneider. Kunsthalle Zürich presents a solo exhibition by Portuguese artist Ana Jotta, curated by Miguel Wandschneider. Our second presentation is of works by David Armstrong (1954–2014), an American photographer based in New York. Associated with the Boston School, his work has been influential in photography, art and fashion. He was celebrated for his tender and unabashed portraits of the people closest to him. Over four decades and in a time of societal turmoil, Armstrong generated both a style-defining portrait of his subculture and a deeply moving panorama of beauty, queerness and intimacy. This first overview of Armstrong's oeuvre in Europe will include numerous unpublished photographs.

Barbara Seiler Galerie | Performance "damned and doomed" with Gregory Tara Hari
Conceived specifically for the gallery space this new performance titled ‘damned and doomed’ explores the power of cursing and cussing as a means of coping with grief, anger, and societal disillusionment. Swearing, often viewed negatively, is portrayed as having a cathartic effect, offering relief from inner and outer pain. Divided into two chapters, the first chapter ‘Hollywood’ delves into early racism and sexism in the US film industry and its influence on European cinema, addressing yellowfacing and the misrepresentation of East-Asian women and people read as woman in Western culture and society. Drawing upon own experiences he highlights examples of misrepresentation in Swiss films, such as ‘Leo Sunnyboy’ and ‘Gekauftes Glück’, along with the social context of migration stories and a racist and fascist political initiative to protect Switzerland from purported foreign infiltration. In contrast, ‘Continental Breakfast’ exposes the behavior of predominantly white tourists in Southeast Asia and their interactions with local culture in regards to respect and representation. The prevalence of raw violence in Thai news coverage and Thai soap operas, such as ‘Ruan That’, and the use of swearing as a raw and honest expression of emotion, challenges societal norms and offers a glimpse into the complexities of cultural identity and injustice. ‘damned and doomed’ is a one-person performance, performed by the artist Gregory Tara Hari. He is wearing a green costume, inspired by the spirit of the banana tree ‘Nang Tani’, and silver finger nails extensions, which are traditionally used in dance and theater throughout Southeast Asia. Currently developed for the gallery space of Barbara Seiler Galerie, the performance will later be developed into a stage version in collaboration with musician Pinky Htut Aung.

Sultan Çoban’s works operate on the threshold between visual art and performance. She repeatedly draws on theatrical techniques as she stages dazzling role plays and re-enactments that raise complex questions about originality, identity and performance. In her work unveiling for a play (act II, scene I), she draws on the function of the theatre curtain (concealing or revealing) as an opportunity for a multi-layered exploration of self-censorship and all that remains off-scene.

Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst | Concert with MADANII
MADANII is a genre-rebel, a barrier-breaking recording artist and creative instigator from Berlin. With an artistic vision rooted in persian culture and informed by her upbringing as the daughter of political refugees in germany, MADANII meshes rhythms, languages, politics, shapes and sounds into a neoteric musical and visual tapestry. MADANII tells an autobiographical story of otherness, un-belonging, and interweaving between cultures, struggles, generational dreams, political absurdities, and female love - all reflected in an unique style that touches on avant-pop, alternative r&b and trap. Widely known for her interdisciplinary approach, MADANII crafts a highly personal audiovisual journey for each of her songs with a clear artistic style and language that has earned her comparisons to the likes of sevdaliza, fka twigs or rosalía.

Gessnerallee | Performance "I O U a Jubilee" with raucous babies
raucous babies came together in 2021 as a cross-disciplinary, explicitly neurodivergent band. Their performances are characterised by a virtuoso interplay of theatrical stagecraft and musical improvisation. This June, they invite you to the sleep concert I O U a Jubilee—the prelude to a seven-part programme that explores the connections between debt relief, sleep and fallow fields. Straddling pastoral nostalgia and electronic noise, they play field recordings, bagpipes and violone and guide the audience through cyclical fields of slumber and release until dawn.

Performance "Rakus" with Mella Jaarsma
Rakus is a performative installation that features Mella Jaarsma’s trademark “body shelters”, which are wearable garments and structures with a symbolic significance. In this work, the garments take on the iconography of the figure of Rangda, the demon queen of Balinese mythology. Rangda, who represents the battle between good and evil, often appears in the Barong dance as a naked old woman with pendulous breasts and a long, protruding tongue. The word “rakus” means greed. The work was born out of the artist’s frustration with existing power structures in Indonesia. Sticking out ones tongue as a facial gesture suggests exasperation, a feeling of frustration. Rakus is about greed and corruption exercised by those in power and the continuous social and economic exploitation that started with the Dutch colonialization in the 1600s. It is also a commentary on the erosion of tradition and ancestral knowledge.

INTERDISCIPLINARY TALKS | What's next for art and AI?
With Refik Anadol, Turkish-American new media artist and designer in conversation with Alistair Hudson, Scientific-Artistic Chairman of the ZKM | Karlsruhe. Organised in partnership with ArtReview and moderated by JJ Charlesworth, art critic and editor at ArtReview. After a decade of pioneering artists experimenting with the possibilities and potentials of AI, AI has suddenly become a major issue for artists and creatives everywhere. Many worry about the impact of AI on many artistic disciplines, raising serious questions about human creativity as much as problems of copyright and intellectual property. But how might artists - and art institutions - positively engage with AI, as it becomes an increasingly significant part of contemporary culture. REFIK ANADOL, born in Istanbul and based in Los Angeles, is a leading media artist and pioneer in machine intelligence aesthetics. His studio focuses on innovative data narratives and immersive environments. Anadol's work, often site-specific, uses data to create dynamic, visually striking experiences. ALISTAIR HUDSON is a curator and museum director with broad-ranging international experience. He combines contemporary curatorial expertise with a profound knowledge of the relationship between art, technology and society. JJ CHARLESWORTH is a writer and art critic and one of the editors of ArtReview. JJ studied fine art at Goldsmiths College, London, and holds a doctorate in art history from the Royal College of Art. Alongside his written reviews, articles and commentaries for ArtReview, he has written for publications including Time Out London, The Daily Telegraph, art-agenda, artnet news and CNN Style. Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst | Workshop "Touching Dreams – Art and Healing"
During the opening weekend, we transform the pink Caring Space into a space for creative encounters. We offer a bilingual (English/German) Art and Healing Workshop – in collaboration with the IAC (Integratives Ausbildungszentrum Zürich). Based on the exhibition "Dineo Seshee Raisibe Bopape: (ka)... | Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst", we explore the healing potential of art. The artist recalls forgotten and repressed stories and invites us to smell, see or dream. Inspired by Bopape, we experiment with colours and natural materials, paint dream images or work with clay. After an introductory round together, we will immerse ourselves individually in our own works. At the end, we will share feelings, dreams and thoughts in the group. No previous artistic experience is required. It's all about creativity, perception and encounters. Come and dream with us! - With Salome Meli, art therapist ED and lecturer IAC and Cynthia Gavranic, art educator Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst and art therapist in training - In German / English - Recommended from 16 years - Registration until June 7 - Number of participants limited to 12 people - Free of charge

- With Salome Meli, art therapist ED and lecturer IAC and Cynthia Gavranic, art educator Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst and art therapist in training
- In German / English
- Recommended from 16 years
- Registration until June 7
- Number of participants limited to 12 people
- Free of charge

Barbara Seiler Galerie | Performance 'Before We Met' with Guillaume Pilet and Lin Zhao
Words and their meanings are at the heart of Guillaume Pilet (b. 1984) and Lin Zhao's narrative performance ‘Before we Met’. The performance script is derived from the chronological sequence of text messages exchanged between the two performers over several weeks following their match on a Chinese dating website, culminating in questions about the right entrance and floor number just seconds before they met in person for the first time. For both, English is a foreign language. Misunderstandings can quickly develop their own dynamics, potentially jeopardizing and ending the new, still fragile relationship. Their communication is marked by personal insecurities, biographical anecdotes, and practical information, reflecting the convergence of two different cultures: the 'local' Lin Zhao and the artist-in-residence from Switzerland, Guillaume Pilet, who was completing an artist residency in Shanghai at Swatch Art Peace Hotel. ‘Before we Met’ was first performed in January 2020 during Guillaume Pilet's inaugural solo exhibition at Barbara Seiler Galerie, at a time when the pandemic had already hit Asia but was still largely ignored in the Western world. Four years later, Pilet and Zhao are re-enacting the performance, manifesting the evolution of their personal history and leading to a double time dimension, and as such referencing the original exhibition title ‘Double Happiness’ or 囍.

Kulturfolger | Public Artwork unveiling: "What can Pluto do for You?" by Lisa Lurati
Since its establishment in 2016, Kulturfolger has engaged various artists to create sunshades for its premises on Idastrasse. CKÖ and Veli & Amos have contributed their distinctive artworks to these sunshades, which serve as a form of public art as we keep them open during sunny days. Now, we have invited Lisa Lurati to intervene on the final remaining eastern side, where she initiates a dialogue not only with the sun but also with other celestial bodies, such as Pluto. Lisa Lurati's sunshade will be unique as it deliberately challenges and plays with the idea of the shade and its functionality.

Barbara Seiler Galerie | Performance "I want to say something!" with Martina-Sofie Wildberger, Denise Hasler and Tobibi Bienz
I want to say something! This performance is a polyphonic improvisation with the words I / WANT / TO / SAY / SOMETHING. For one hour three performers are looping these words in other rhythms, intensities and spatial configurations. On the one side the multiple possibilities of creating meaning with these five words are explored: I / SAY I / WANT / SOMETHING, SAY! SAY / SOMETHING! and many other combinations thereof. On the other side, when said in loops the meaning of a given word can slide semantically. Through repetition WANT becomes WON’T or WANT; WANT / TO can be ONE TWO and SAY is phonetical- ly the same as “six” in Italian. Further, the performers examine how meaning changes through the tone of their voice and our physical interaction with the space creating an environment that can be calm, loud, alarming, calming, solitary or comfortable. Always connected to each other, at times they speak together and at other times alone. In this collective speaking the performers maintain an individual voice that explores different situations where language creates, transforms and sometimes loses its power.

Shedhalle | Lecture performance by Daniel Felstead
Curator Michelangelo Miccolis will be in conversation with Daniel Felstead. Dr. Daniel Felstead is an experiential designer and educator. He currently holds the position of Course Leader of the MA and BA (Hons) Fashion Media Practice & Criticism courses at the London College of Fashion (UAL). Both these practice-led courses expand the remit of fashion communication by deploying it as a potent tool to critically interrogate, confront, and shape the most pressing political, social and environmental challenges facing us today. In his own practice, Felstead has produced digital, exhibition and live works for organisations including the British Museum, Google, the Jerwood Foundation, Samsung, Serpentine Galleries, Tate and V&A Museum. He has taught and presented internationally and contributed numerous essays for publications including Revolver Publishing, Skiro Editore, the Swedish Dance History, and Tate Publishing. Felstead's PhD, which he carried out at Royal Central School of Speech & Drama (University of London), used the artistic practice of Tino Sehgal to explore issues of uncertainty, contingency and complexity within speculative modes of production.

Schauspielhaus Zürich | Carmen by Moved by the Motion by Wu Tsang, Tosh Basco, Asma Maroof, Josh Johnson
Moved by the Motion takes on the famous tragedy 'Carmen'. Originally written by Prosper Mérimée and transformed into one of the most iconic operas of all time by Georges Bizet, Carmen’s tale has been adapted in numerous ways, inspiring popular culture and remaining in the collective consciousness through its controversy. Carmen is a rebellious bird, a wanderer, a hustler, a factory worker, a polylingual, shape-shifting lover, stateless and ungovernable. In collaboration with writers Sophia Al-Maria and Fred Moten, Moved by the Motion digs through the many layers of Carmen’s legacy while taking the canonical source material further. Bizet’s original score weaves together with musical interventions by composers Andrew Yee and Asma Maroof to create a hybrid opera-theatre piece. Working seamlessly with language, movement, image and song, Moved by the Motion forms a genre-bending adaptation that reinterprets the themes that Carmen embodies: love, loss and liberation.

Gessnerallee | Performance "unveiling for a play" (act II, scene I) with artist Sultan Çoban

Barbara Seiler Galerie | Performance 'Libretto' with Sophie Jung
‘Libretto’ is a group of sculptures, of which each has its own performance, which can be activated by the artist. Sophie Jung's sculptural work consists of bodies made up of both found and haphazardly produced attributes and stands as a network of abiding incompletion, an ever changing choir of urgencies and pleasures, traumas and manifestations that communally relay between dominant and minor themes. Jung hopes for agnostic alliances, cross-material solidarity and assemblages that defy resolution. Her approach to “stuff”—both legible utensil and metaphoric apparition sits somewhere between materialist responsibility and wild becoming. Her writing exists in the tradition of écriture feminine and lives as poly-vocal collage, often materialized and extended collaboratively.

Kunsthalle Zürich | ART+SCIENCE TALK WITH TRAJAL HARRELL AND SEBASTIAN JESSBERGER
Renowned Trajal Harrell, dancer and choreographer in conversation with Sebastian Jessberger, Professor for Neurosciences and Director of the Brain Research Institute, University of Zurich. Moderated by Daniel Baumann, Director Kunsthalle Zürich. American choreographer TRAJAL HARRELL (*in Douglas, Georgia) gained global recognition with his series of works ‘Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church’ and is now a regular guest on the international dance and visual arts circuit. The unique style of Trajal Harrell’s works is a result not just of the unusual way in which he combines dance languages that might seem very distant from each other, such as voguing, postmodern dance and butoh, but also and above all of the fragility and humour that pervade all his work. His pieces are always an homage to the people standing on stage. He clothes them in carefully selected fabrics, draws major inspiration from developments in haute couture, and his highly personal style of movement turns his performers into unusual and autonomous beings. He performs in most of his pieces himself. Since 2019 Trajal Harrell has been in-house director at Schauspielhaus Zürich, where he directs the Schauspielhaus Zürich Dance Ensemble. SEBASTIAN JESSBERGER is Professor for Neurosciences and Director of the Brain Research Institute. He studied Medicine in Hamburg, Germany and carried out his medical thesis at the Center for Molecular Neurobiology (ZMNH) in Hamburg. In 2002 he started a joint residency in the laboratory of Gerd Kempermann at the Max Delbruck Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) and the Dept. of Neurology of the Charité University Hospital in Berlin. As a postdoctoral fellow (2004-2007) in the laboratory of Fred H. Gage at the Salk Institute he continued to work on neural stem cell biology and neurogenesis in the adult brain. From 2007 to 2012 he was Assistant Professor at the ETH Zurich and joined the Brain Research Institute in August 2012. He received various prizes (e.g., Max Cloëtta Foundation award 2023, Robert Bing prize 2016, Friedrich Götz prize 2013) and was awarded to join the EMBO Young Investigator program in 2012. He obtained several ERC/SNSF replacement grants. WATCH BACK:
