Few painters of his generation did more to shape Switzerland’s cultural self-image than Ferdinand Hodler (1853–1918). His name and work have become iconic. But is the idea of a ‘national artist’ now obsolete? Why is this figure still firmly embedded in the collective consciousness? The Kunsthaus sets out to answer those questions, shed light on the progressive aspects of Hodler’s work, and showcase the rich diversity of his impact.

Sun, June 09, 10:00 – 18:00

Kiki Kogelnik took a combative approach to materials, colours and social conventions. After initially working as an expressionist painter, Kogelnik evolved into a flamboyant practitioner of Pop Art, experimenting with collage and airbrush techniques, and with new materials such as vinyl. In visionary fashion, she anticipated issues that are now more topical than ever: questions of sexual identities and ethical concerns surrounding cutting-edge research.

Performance "Yellow, or What Nature Implies" by Latefa Wiersch as part of the "Apropos Hodler" exhibition
The performance explores the political implications of bodies. Bodies that symbolise so-called foreign countries and cultures. It confronts social constructions of "untouched" nature, which in the western hemisphere are often fuelled by supposedly apolitical HD images of deserted landscapes or traditionally dressed indigenous people.
