Few contemporary artists are as present in the public eye as Jonathan Meese (born 1970) – and have been for almost twenty-five years. His diverse artistic endeavours – from painting, sculpture, graphic art and photography to film, opera, installation and performance to poetry and texts – bear witness to an extremely extensive artistic oeuvre, which is also evident in the current exhibitions in Zurich. As the title of the show at the Tichy Ocean Foundation suggests, the main theme here is the artist himself, the ‘Art Kid Johnny’.

Jonathan Meese’s mother Brigitte has supported his artistic endeavours from the very beginning. She is also the main protagonist of the exhibition at the Wasserkirche, which is closely linked to the show at the Tichy Ocean Foundation. The reference to Dracula emphasises the eternal confrontation with the supposed duality of life and death. Inspired by a visit by the artist in June 2023 to the crypt of the Wasserkirche, where, according to legend, the boulder on which Zurich’s patron saints Felix and Regula are said to have been beheaded as Roman soldiers in the course of the Diocletian persecution of Christians around 300 AD, both presentations are arranged in the style of a mausoleum.
