Soil is a living archive, absorbing the traces of organisms and the history of human activity. Its knowledge teaches us about the long history of the Earth and our ancestors. This exhibition echoes the heated debates within the International Union of Geological Sciences in charge of voting on the transition – or not – to the geological era of the Anthropocene this year. It reminds us that geological science and extractivist mining are intimately linked, and that their international institutions are still dominated by the industrial North. In the exhibition, critical cartographies reclaim geological imaginaries, this time informed by environmental humanities from a decolonial perspective. By separating man from the rest of the living world, modernity has forged epic. But the world is alive, constituted by beings, whose agency modifies it and makes it evolve. More-Than-Planet examines possible scales of action in the Anthropocene and formulates speculative hypotheses at more-than-human scales. In parallel with the exhibition, the More-Than-Planet lab will be offering a series of associated events enabling artists, natural scientists, humanities researchers, environmental activists and communities to discuss the implications of the Anthropocene vote and explore shared futures.
