This extraordinary exhibition brings the previously largely unknown cosmos of Emma Jung (1882–1955) into dialogue with contemporary British artist Rebecca Ackroyd (*1987). For the first time, Emma Jung’s records from her analytic practice, including drawings, paintings, poems, and notes, are being presented to the public. Emma Jung, a skilled analyst and close collaborator and interlocutor of her husband C.G. Jung, significantly influenced the exploration of the human psyche – even though she often worked in the background of the famous Swiss psychiatrist. Rebecca Ackroyd’s œuvre features numerous parallels with Emma Jung. Her drawings give shape to the unconscious and, similarly to Jung, reflect the psychological and spiritual dimension of art. For this exhibition, she is developing a new series of drawings and sculptures, conceived as intimate expressions of symbolic orders, inviting a closer encounter with the inner world of making.
Six artists—students of the MA Fine Arts at Zurich University of the Arts—leave trails in the Artists’ Bar at Cabaret Voltaire, leading in various directions. The exhibition “The Red Herring” named after the English expression for a false or misleading clue, plays not only with distraction but also with ambiguity and the expectations we place on contemporary art and the historical birthplace of Dada. This site is visited daily by tourists, the art scene, and random passersby – some hoping to discover treasures from the last century, despite the space undergoing modifications over time.
Swiss artist Philip Ortelli animates Cabaret Voltaire—the birthplace of the Dada art movement—with a site-responsive installation inspired by his experience in Shanghai.
The art installation by Philip Ortelli powered by the SWATCH ART PEACE HOTEL is on view in the bar area adjacent to the exhibition «The Red Herring». Learn more.
As dreams take center stage in PROVENCE’s current inquiry into the Unconscious, we invited friends – artists, editors, even Jungian analysts – to share fragments of their unconscious cognitive activity, each rendered on paper. Coinciding with the release of PROVENCE’s new publication, a rotating selection of these original contributions will be on view in the Historical Hall of Cabaret Voltaire.
